Radon essays Radon is an element that is on the periodic table of elements. It is a member of the family called the noble gases, which is group number 18. Radon is a gas. It is a gas at 298 k. it is the heaviest known mononuclear gas at that temperature. Radon is also colorless. When it is cooled below the freezing point, radon exhibits a brilliant phosphorescence, which becomes yellow as the temperature is lowered. At the temperature of liquid air it is sort of an orangish-red. The noble gases can be found on the very right side of the periodic table of elements. Radon has been around for quite some time. Radon comes from the element radium, which is derived from the element uranium. After radium has been 1,620 days old, radon forms 3.8 days afterwards. Radon is most often produced by the decay of radium in the crust of the earth. Radon was first discovered by a man named Fredrich Ernst Dorn. Mr. Dorn discovered this element around 1898. At first radon was not called radon, it was called niton. Niton coming from the Latin word nitens, meaning shining. It was only called radon up until about 1923. Now, lets talk about the properties that radon has. It is element number 86 on the periodic table of elements. This means that is has 86 protons, and also 86 electrons in a neutral state. The atomic mass of radon is 222.0176. now if you take the atomic mass, and round it to the nearest whole number, and subtract the atomic number, then you have the number of neutrons in radon, which is 136. The density of radon at 293 degrees Kelvin is .00973 g/cm cubed. Radon has a boiling point of 211.4 degrees Kelvin. It is a nonmetal, but rather a gas. The melting point, which is different from the boiling point, is 202 degrees Kelvin. To my knowledge, there is no data on the oxidation numbers for the element radon. Business people are still lousy KISSers, Daily Telegraph Business people are still lousy KISSers, Daily Telegraph New research reveals that an inability or reluctance to use plain English or to keep it short and simple (KISS) is still the single greatest barrier to good business writing. The findings by Emphasis, who have been training business people how to write for over eight years, show that a staggering 99 per cent of the pre-training documents they receive from clients contain unnecessary business-jargon or overly-long and complicated words and phrases. And for 63 per cent of people, this failure to KISS represents one of the three biggest challenges to improving their business writing.* The research findings coincide with the announcement of the Plain English Campaigns Annual Awards on 12 December, where organisations and individuals are recognised for having genuinely made an effort to present themselves using clear and concise English. The research only confirms what we already knew from working with a broad range of blue chip companies and public sector organisations, says Emphasis chief executive, Robert Ashton. Despite the odd refreshing example of an individual or organisation really embracing the KISS principle, using plain English remains the exception rather than the rule. So why cant business people KISS? A major issue is the popular misconception that long words and elaborate phrases are somehow a sign of superior intellect or professionalism. But people are inundated with documents to read (an average company with 5000 employees produces a staggering 78 pieces of writing every minute). They are also overworked and short of time so they dont want to have to translate complicated words and phrases; they just want to get to the point. And this is only half the story, says Ashton. The other problem is management speak and buzz words. People are tired of reading about synergy and excellence, while cutting edge or innovative products and services are ten-a-penny these days. And as for raising the bar and low-hanging fruit, the first thing to spring to mind is some kind of tropical limbo challenge. People sometimes think that using plain English represents some kind of dumbing down. But short words are not lightweight or less useful. In fact, theyre often more powerful. I did my schooling in the idyllic atmosphere  of which I gradually flourished as a versatile person where I got my first leap by scoring 75% in tenth standard. I scored 87 marks in mathematics and 82 in science; with this motivation I pursued Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my major course in Intermediatewhere from, I secured 73.1% in higher secondary exam. The competitive spirit within me acted as a catalyst in all my academics successes. Pursuing Engineerin g as my future was a natural consequence because of my undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. I have benefited from the breadth of College of Engineering Research, affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University one of the most prestigious university in India. The day of my undergraduate study helped me to get sound knowledge and a firm grasps over the principles underlying the course, which gave me an edge above other students. I excelled it with first class with distinction with an aggregate of 74.32%. The undergraduate study has given me a comprehensive exposure to a wide spectrum of courses in mechanical engineering namely, Strength of Materials, Design of Machine Members 12, Kinematics of Machinery, Thermodynamics, Finite Element Analysis, Mechanics of Solids, Robotics, Computer aided Design/Computer aided Manufacturing etc. I strongly believe in â€Å"learning by doing†. It is the hope of coming up with path breaking results streaked with an element of uncertainty that makes experimental result extremely fascinating. I went beyond the four walls of the classroom, during my undergraduate course, I visited many industries in which I underwent five week technical training at Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), is a Department of Atomic Energy on the study of Manufacturing Extrusion Die on CNC Lathe Machine which includes it’s casting to final Product in plant and other applications. Later I had undergone industrial visit at Vizag Steel Plant popularly known as Vizag Steel is the most advanced steel producer in India with the help of German and soviet technology where I have learnt the process of Manufacturing of steel from its coke to final product. This provides to be a very valuable experience as it provided me with an industry exposure and a chance to showcase my technical knowledge in an industry based environment. I wanted to get closer look at the application of Mechanical Engineering. I presented a good number of technical papers at the national level. The first competition I took part was a National level Paper Presentation event conducted by NIT Rourkela, as  a part of ‘INNOVATION 2011’ and I got Merit Certification. Then I participated in a ROBOTIC Work shop held at Kakatiya University, Warangal and I presented paper on ‘Solar Hybrid Vehicle’ at VNR Vignan Jyothi and received a merit certification. And I have also participated as a Volunteer in a prestigious Social Activity like ’Hyderabad Literary Festival’ held in January 2014. I have organized many technical and cultural events. All this extra-curricular activities have made me social accomplished with self-confidence, communicating skills, leadership qualities and team spirit. My major contribution towards research, leading the team in an academic oriented research main project â€Å"Dynamic Analysis of Composite Propeller of Ship Using FEM† The project deals with modeling and analyzing the propeller blade by using ’Ca rbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic’ materials, to reduce the Vibrations Noise in the Propeller. This requires high end Modeling software’s. The Solid model is developed in CATIA V5 R19, Tetrahedral mesh is generated in HYPER MESH and Static Modal Analysis is done in ANSYS. The Analysis results showed that the natural frequencies of composite propeller were more than aluminum propeller, which indicates that the operation range of frequency is higher for composite materials. My role in this project as a team leader was to provide the basic functionality which deals with Modeling and analyzing was handled by my team mates along with my participation. The success of this project made me thirst in quest for a research in Design for Manufacturing, Advanced Material Technology and Design Development which is the front and backend of my application. It has long been my ambition to pursue my studies in Automotive Engineering and to do it from a country like Germany will be a golden opportunity of my life. I know that Germany has got good reputation for higher education around the world. Its automotive industry is among the top manufacturers in the world with famous BMW and Mercedes as the leading success story of quality, modernity and comfort in automobiles. I am in pretty good health right now where I am at in life. My family does not have a history of anything that can be described that could be foreseen as a problem. What I can talk about is a generalized health maintenance and plan for staying healthy that should be easy to follow and quite rewarding. I will talk about eating disorders specifically so as to adhere to the instruction of the assignment. Eating disorders are some of the top concerns with any person that has health concerns regarding food. To make sure that someone can be successful in achieving a healthy body it is important to set goals that you can adhere to. One goal that is very important to me is easily to live a long and productive life. This can be considered a physical exercise goal in the sense that without exercise you can not really expect the same rewarding health as you would with regular exercise. As another goal that would help in maintaining health I would like to set monthly targets for weight and physical fitness that are realistic and obtainable. By setting a personal target weight you can compare your weight once a week and see an accurate model of what is happening with your diet and exercise plan. Developing an exercise plan that keeps you motivated and makes the time spent fun and rewarding is important to ensure the best results from any plan. On the nutritional side of a goal oriented approach to health the best idea is the simplest. By watching your caloric intake and serving sizes you can c ut out a large amount of the fat causing nutrients as well as high sodium and other things that could potentially jeopardize your health plan. On Theory Integration Essay

On Control Theory There are two founding tenets of control theory (Gottfredson and Hirschi,1990): all behavior, criminal or not, arises from the hedonistic tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain; and the behavior may be criminal – or criminally analogous – when the actor is ‘insufficiently restrained’ from resorting to force or fraud in the pursuit of interest. Control in this context refers to restraining factors in the individual, in the form of internalized norms comparable to the superego and ego, and the controlling influence and authority of social institutions, such as the family, school, or neighborhood. Reckless (1961), for example, sees conformity in terms of inner containment through a favorable self-concept, goal orientation, frustration tolerance, and commitment to norms, and outer containment which comes from the availability of meaningful roles and social acceptance. Violation of these restraints involves personal costs in the form of punishment, social rejection, or loss of future opportunities. Whether a person yields to temptation therefore depends on the balance between anticipated rewards and costs (Piliavin, Hardyck and Vadum, 1968).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the most significant with regards to this theory is the social control theory of Hirschi (1969, 1978, 1986), which suggests that conformity is dependent on the interrelation between the person and the environment (a â€Å"stake in conformity†), and that deviance results when the interrelation between the two is lost. The correlated elements of the bond are: (1) attachment to others in the form of conscience, internalized norms, and caring what others think; (2) commitment to conventional goals; (3) involvement in conventional pursuits incompatible with delinquent activities; and (4) belief in the moral validity of conventional values. No special motive to deviate is proposed, since everyone is exposed to temptation, and the theory is concerned with criminality in general rather than the commission of specific crimes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The theory is silent about how bonds develop or break down, or how weak bonds produce deviant behavior other than by leaving the individual â€Å"free to deviate† (Conger, 1976; Box, 1981). Several theorists maintain that weakness of the social bond can only partially account for deviant behavior, and that individual variation in the motivation to deviate must be taken into account. This is the position taken by Elliott et al. (1985), who propose an integration of strain, control, and social learning theories.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   However, Hirschi and Gottfredson have recently reaffirmed the view that no special motivation is required to explain crime, which is a natural consequence of unrestrained human tendencies to seek pleasure and avoid pain (Hirschi and Gottfredson, 1988; Gottfredson and Hirschi, 1990). They emphasize the compatibility of classical choice theories of criminal acts and the positivist concept of criminality as the tendency to commit crimes, but see the latter as a function of self control. Criminal acts are held to be the immediate gratification of common human desires, and require little planning, effort, or skill. They depend on opportunities and temptations, and are closely related to other socially disapproved acts, such as drinking, smoking, drug-taking, illicit sex, and even accidents, all of which become more likely when people lack self control. Individuals who possess such generalized attributes have the tendency to be impulsive, insensible, physical (as opposed to mental), daredevil, thoughtless, and nonverbal. Low self control is preferred to â€Å"criminality† because of the positivist implications in the latter of positive causes, and hence differences between crimes in motives. Since the only common element in crimes and analogous acts is lack of self control, it is unnecessary to distinguish types of crime or criminal. On Containment Theory Since this is a study which involves both inner containment and outer containment, we are concerned with how these elements are formed within the individual and the relation of the two elements to each other. The central concepts of containment theory are: outer containment, inner containment, physiological and psychological pushes and the social stratosphere or pressures and pulls. Outer or external containment [Reckless, 1967:470] is the ability of the society, the state, the tribe, the village, the family, and other nuclear groups to hold the individual within the bounds of accepted norms and expectations. It assumes that society and particular nuclear groups contain, steer, shield, divert, support, reinforce, and limit its members. This may include norms and expectations, customs, rules and laws. The theory, therefore, assumes that individuals are presented with a set of norms for different age groups, for males and females and for various statuses. From these expectations [Reckless, 1967:470], one is presented with the â€Å"correct† model of behavior. When discussing outer containment, it is also necessary to assume that deviant, illegal and immoral behavior exists in most societies and that a society usually produces effective conformers. There are three major aspects [Reckless, 1967:470-471J of external containment for modern, mobile societies. Groups provide various rules of behavior and expect conformity to these rules. If a group can successfully get its members to internalize or conform to these rules, then external containment has occurred; violations are held at a tolerable level. Secondly, in addition to presenting the individual with rules and limitations, groups must also provide one with meaningful roles and activities. These roles may range from the family to a peer group or an educational situation. Roles limit behavior and when there are no roles or few roles present, then the individual is left on his own to establish limits on behavior. A third component of external containment [Reckless, 1967:471] is that of group reinforcement. This includes: a sense of belonging and identity, supportive relationships and acceptance by the group. This component comes primarily from nuclear groups; the family or a peer group. This is also called incorporation or integration of the individual. If one has a sense of belonging, acceptance and support, then one is more likely to stay within the given norms of society. Inner containment [Reckless, 1967:475J is the ability of the person to follow expected norms and, therefore, to direct himself. It involves the individual personality’s need to live up to expectation of others. It may inc1ude the aspect of shaming. For example, â€Å"you ought to be ashamed of yourself†. Inner containment may also include those phenomena which may threaten the self image or make one feel guilty. It is one’s stake in conformity, or one’s moral nature. It is manifested on a continuum from strong to weak self control. Reckless [1967:475] states that the self increases in significance as a controlling agent as a society becomes more diverse, alienated and impersonal, and as the individual spends an increasing amount of time away from home base. Increased impersonalization means that the self must exert greater directional control. There are certain components of the self which strengthen it to resist deflection from societal norms. These components make it possible for the individual to contain himself in a modern, mobile environment. They are: a favorable self concept, goal orientation or aspiration level, level of frustration tolerance and retention of norms. The first component of self, according to Reckless [1967:475], is the favorable self perception. The individual who perceives his own responsibility will act responsible. A favorable self concept aids in following approved standards of behavior. The person who perceives himself as honest, reliable and helpful will most likely act that way. Goal direction [Reckless, 1967:476] is the second component of self which gives high directional capability. Capability for inner direction is the result of focusing on such approved goals as education and job improvement. This is especially true when goals involve long range planning and effort. This insures against deviance because of the necessity to conform to socially approved methods to obtain the goals. Related to goal orientation is one’s aspiration level which should consist of realistically obtainable goals. The third self factor [Reckless, 1967:476J is that of frustration tolerance. This tolerance should be able to withstand pressures, failure and disappointments. Containment theory assumes that a high frustration tolerance will insulate the individual against being diverted from his course. It enables a person to be more in control of the situation. The last component [Reckless, 1967:476J of inner containment is retention of norms. This retention is the result of adherence, acceptance, and commitment, identification with, legitimation of laws, codes, values, customs and institutions. It is, therefore, assumed that self containment is a personal internalization of models of behavior. Ordinary strength and ordinary weakness in self containment represents a normal range of self development. An abnormal manifestation would be extreme rigidity of character. This may be the result of faulty development. Integrating Theories   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The divergence of control theory and containment theory is based on the maintenance of the status quo or the upholding of universal social standards. In the former theory, the curtailment of hedonistic tendencies of an individual is being elucidated to ensure that deviant behaviors will not manifest. While in the latter theory, the focal point is to provide ways on how deviant behaviors will be contained. Hence, theory A (Control Theory) provides the explanation of why a certain individual behave in a given manner, and theory B (Containment Theory) outlines different means in curbing out such given manner.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   If we put this context, say for example in the case of gang delinquencies, control theory will point out that a gang member shows juvenile behavior due to peer pressure, poverty, lack of parental guidance, and etc. The concern of containment theory on this crime is to provide realizable measurements for the person such as rehabilitation, education, guidance or simply through guiding the person on understanding the concept of good self image. The team is composed by two key members which is the team manger and the rest of the team members. These members need to posses the ability to work together. Team manager The team manager is an important role in the project planning since they coordinate all aspects of the teams such as, determine the beginning of the project and organize the rules for it. When considering team members to be managers we should consider the following as indicated by Garris, Leah B (2007) â€Å"Good communication and listening skills, with the ability to ask open-ended questions.†. Team managers need to be good organizers so they have all the material to begin the project planning and be able to explain it to all of the other team members. The managers should have a people person personality since they will sometimes serve as mediators. A good team manger is the beginning to any perfect project. Team members A good team consists of people that are willing to communicate and work well with others. Good team members as indicated in the study conducted by Weems-Landingham, Velvet (2004), â€Å"perceived abilities to plan and coordinate activities, tasks, and information† (Ch 2). As part of a team the members need to follow the project plan and communicate so they can all be working towards the same objective. The first main ability a team member should have is good communication skills so they can communicate well with the other members. If a team member is not willing to do their part in the project planning the outcome will not be successful (Weems-Landingham, Velvet, 2004). Steps for Project Planning in Teams There are various steps in project planning that are beneficial when working in teams. Two of these steps have been known to be good tools for success in projects. The way these steps are applied are different but the over all outcome that the teams are striving for is to have a successful project. Some companies are using these steps to plan there projects. Knowing the steps of pre-project and the after-project that helps us work more efficiently and helps us review the outcome of the project. Pre-Project planning This step is important because it helps you gather all of the information you need to have when project planning in teams. Some of the information that is needed for the team to begin their work is budgeting, scheduling, financing and decision making; all members need to know the specifics to have a good outcome. The one process that is essential is backscheduling and involves looking backwards from target date, beginning with your goal or objective and then plotting out the means to achieve it as mentioned in The McGraw-Hill Companies, DeJanesz-Dowd-Schmeider, (2001, p 355). Pre-projecting is helpful if you do not procrastinate. The team needs to be organized and stay in communication constantly so there is success. After Project planning. This step is good since it helps you determine if the steps taken helped the team reach the goal in a timely manner and with in the guidelines that were implemented. This is also a good tool to help you avoid using steps that were not beneficial and drifted the team off target. This is also a good way to determine if the rules that were used cause conflicts with in the team members. This helps determine if there was a lack of or inadequate measurement of the project management process, with a focus on the measurement of outcomes eliminat[ing] the capability of the project team to make timely and cost-effective midcourse corrections as indicated in the study of Uday-Riley, Marcey (2006). This will help determine where the weakness and attributes of the team were. Different Ways of Project Planning in teams With the advances of technology today we now have two ways of project planning in teams which consist in using the traditional way and the virtual way. Both in traditional and virtual ways the communication among team members is essential. Both the traditional way and the virtual way indicates that the overall result is to have success in every project planning tasks that is given to the teams. Whether using the traditional or virtual way the team members should follow the five stages of Tuckman’s model as explained in The McGraw-Hill Companies, Kreinter-Kinicki (2003 Ch12 P 414) which are Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning so any changes done during the project’s duration can run smoothly. Traditional Way This way is used when team members have met and work directly work with each other. Schools that use the method of teaming students use this way in order for project planning to be discuss in the daily and weekly events. Small companies us the traditional way so members can communicate openly during meeting. The element this way brings is that it is a more personal way of planning and performing projects as a team. By meeting and interacting directly and indirectly with each other the team members seem to be more willing to incorporate the Tuckman’s model in project planning. Virtual Way This way is the way some companies and schools use to analyze the planning of a project before asking a team to use it. Some ways of using the virtual way is to request surveys and questionnaires for project planning in teams. Large corporations use this method when opening branches in other cities and counties. These companies are using what they have learned has worked from their main branch to start the project planning in any other. In the study by Delisle, Connie Louise Gail (2002) said that â€Å"Virtual ways of organizing and working continue to generate interest globally in academic and business communities†(p7). An example of virtual way being implemented is when you work for a large company you can be part of a team but never meet. Conclusion In order for success to happen in project planning in teams the main key is to maintain good communication always. Planning the project well consist of having a good team leader and team members, knowing the project and knowing if surveys and questionnaires have been done on the project presented. Having team members that know what the project consist of will be more determine to work towards the same goal and meet deadlines.
